Wings of Influence: Air Power’s Role in Recent Conflicts

In an era where technological advancements and geopolitical shifts continually reshape the nature of warfare, air power has emerged as a vital tool influencing conflict outcomes and guiding military strategy. It is imperative to explore how air power has been employed in contemporary conflicts (in the last two years), its operational evolution and its impact on modern warfare.

To address these critical issues, CASS, Islamabad, organised a roundtable discussion on 5 December 2024 titled ‘Wings of Influence: Air Power’s Role in Recent Conflicts.’

The discussion explored technological advancements and new operational concepts in air power. Additionally, case studies of Ukraine, Gaza, Syria, and Yemen were examined to analyse the application and impact of air power. Strategic outcomes, doctrinal shifts, and future considerations were also brainstormed.

The distinguished subject matter experts who spoke at the roundtable included:

  • Air Marshal Zulfiquar Ahmed Qureshi, President, Centre for Character & Leadership Development (JCCL)
  • Air Commodore Fawad Zahir, Director, Office of Research Innovation and Commercialisation (ORIC), Air University
  • Air Vice Marshal Nasser ul Haq Wyne (Retd), Director (Aerospace & Warfare), Centre for Aerospace & Security Studies (CASS), Islamabad

Air Vice Marshal Wyne also moderated the discussion, which concluded with President CASS Air Marshal Javaid Ahmed (Retd) making the closing remarks.

‘States tend to overestimate themselves or the benefits and swiftness of war, and to underestimate their opponents’ capabilities, intentions, or the costs and duration of war.’ If anything, the 2026 war initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran shall be remembered in the annals of warfare among the most visible manifestations of this dynamic.
The war, immediately preceded by the January mass protests in Iran, did not represent a sudden rupture but rather the continuation of a 47-year-long confrontation and a more intense phase of the June 2025 war.
The US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, defined the war’s objectives as being laser-focused: to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities and its security infrastructure, while ensuring that it could never develop nuclear weapons. Beyond these stated objectives, among the priorities on the continuum also lay the objective of regime change, with both President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu explicitly calling on the Iranian population to take over the government at the outset of the war.
